“Led-Bamboo” to shine on the green dimension of design

Omni-Dimensional Design in China, at Beijing Center for the Arts.

Jeff Dah-Yue Shi presents “Bamboo Project” for the exhibition, Omni-Dimensional Design in China, at Beijing Center for the Arts. Out of the belief in design as a discipline to fulfill social responsibilities, Jeff has created a new type of construction material, “Led-Bamboo” as the highlight of “Bamboo Project”. “Led-Bamboo” is the combination of two different industries: bamboo flooring and LED. It is energy-saving and needs no unnecessary lighting decorations. Moreover, living space is enlarged and your sense towards the interior is refreshed when this innovative “Led-Bamboo” is applied.

Besides “Led-Bamboo”, the resilience and flexibility of bamboo fibers make possible the quakeproof bamboo house built in the venue. Inside the lodge displayed various bamboo design objects. They have shown the potential of the left behind Chinese traditional bamboo crafts when revitalized by contemporary design. Attempting to propose a design philosophy based on Chinese traditions and to echo contemporary environmental issues, Jeff has unfolded “Bamboo Project” as the alternative solution.

Visitors can smell bamboo fragrance when walking into the exhibition. The appearance of the bamboo house is a free-formed intertexture, an organic pattern resembling tactile sensation, which is an application of traditional crafts. Entering the bamboo house, visitors will find “Led-Bamboo” dimmed and brightened with rhythm. When the LED is turned off, in the beholders’ eyes exists solely mosaic bamboo flooring made up of three different levels of colors. When the LED is turned on, the gentle light would pass through the bamboo skin in designated areas.

“Led-Bamboo” is the latest design by Jeff Dah-Yue Shi, with Dasso Flooring and Trend Lighting Corporation as sponsors. When it is applied in an extremely simple space like the bamboo house, energy is saved and unnecessary lighting decorations are removed, without impairing the lighting effects. The living space becomes more generous. “Led-Bamboo” displayed in the exhibition is a small but complete representation. It may also be used in larger spaces, such as clubs, commercial premises, residences and offices.

design objects for “Bamboo Project”.

Various designers are invited to present bamboo-made design objects for “Bamboo Project”, many of which are winners of Red Dot Product Design Awards and iF Product Design Awards. The list of designers is: Chih Kang Chu, Yu-Jui Chou, Chun-Hao Chen, Po-Ching Liao, Shih-Wen Chang and Konstantin Grcic. Jeff Dah-Yue Shi also takes part with his Chair Jun Zi and Chair Qin Jian. The side view of the former is similar to the Chinese character “Jun”, which denotes “a noble man”, while the latter is inspired by the once-flourished bamboo industry in Taiwan.

“Bamboo Project”--“Led-Bamboo”、the bamboo house、numerous design objects included, is able to correspond to current cultural heritage and cultural development. Hence it is capable of a spiritual conversation with the modern era. It embodies the creativity of design in various aspects, including product, space, architecture, art, and graphic design, etc. Design, in Jeff’s eyes, involves mobilizing one’s aspirations, goodwill, wisdom, experience, common sense and curiosity to communicate with nature, probe into the present and the future, and cope with the various issues of human existence. Jeff sincerely expects that “Bamboo Project”, under the theme of altruism, Zeitgeist and social responsibility, will add to the quality of the natural environment and human civilization.
